How to Use AI to Learn a Language

Do you use AI to make your life easier in any way?

Perhaps it helps you for work, or perhaps you ask it for life advice.

Whether you are an avid (daily) user, or someone who doesn’t know much about it, in this episode you’ll learn how you can use AI to help your English grow and improve.

I’ll share some advice and ideas to use AI to learn a language, and what I do personally in my own studies.

Episode Summary

Here’s a summary of what I spoke about today.

💬 Bounce Ideas and Build Your Routine

AI is great for thinking out loud. Describe your goals and let it help you shape a learning plan, or simply have your own ideas reflected back to you in a clearer way.

📖 Get Grammar Explained at Your Level

Instead of reading a textbook definition, try asking for an explanation with examples suited to your level. Something like "explain this like I'm B1 with three examples" goes a long way.

✏️ Fix Unnatural Writing

Paste in something you wrote and ask AI to correct any mistakes and explain why. It is one of the fastest ways to understand what went wrong rather than just being told it is wrong.

🌍 Translation and Simplification

Need something translated, or a sentence rewritten in simpler English? You can even ask for language at a specific difficulty, like "make this 20% easier" or "suitable for ESL learners".

🗣️ Low-Pressure Speaking Practice

Practising conversation with AI means no anxiety and unlimited attempts. It is not a replacement for real interaction, but it is a useful warm-up with no judgement and no time pressure.

📱 Natural Phrases On the Go

Not sure how to say something naturally in the moment? Just ask. Whether it is ordering tickets or making a request, AI can quickly give you the phrasing a native speaker would actually use.

📚 Vocabulary Expansion

Ask for five different ways to say something and you will instantly have new options to try. It is a quick habit that gradually builds a much more varied vocabulary over time.

🧩 Quizzes and Custom Activities

AI can turn any topic into a quiz, gap-fill, or matching activity on the spot. If you want to test what you have just learned rather than passively re-read it, this is a great option.

⚠️ Where AI Still Falls Short

Pronunciation feedback is not reliable yet, and AI tends to be too encouraging rather than truly honest. It may even tell you something is perfect when it is not, and only change its mind if you push back.

🚫 Do Not Use AI to Replace Real People

Language exists to connect with other humans, so real conversation practice matters. The awkwardness and unpredictability of talking to real people is not a problem to avoid, it is part of the learning.
