Level Up English Podcast 331 How to get better at decisions

How to Make Better Choices

In this episode, we’ll be talking about making decisions and the idea of being an indecisive person. I’m sure, like me, this is something that you have also struggled with at least some point in the past, and whether we’re talking about life-changing decisions, or simple everyday choices, getting better at deciding on what to do will improve our lives.

The main areas I cover today are why we have a hard time making decisions, and also some tips and tricks on how to get better. And of course, as always, I’ll be sharing useful English phrases and words throughout.

Why We Can't Make Decisions

Common Reasons

  • Perfectionism: Wanting to make the perfect choice holds us back.
  • Fear of Failure: Worrying about making the wrong decision.
  • Analysis Paralysis: Too many options make it harder to choose.
  • Decision Fatigue: Mentally exhausted from overthinking.
  • Indecision: Waiting for others to choose — but that’s still a choice.

How to Be More Decisive

  • Notice the anxious feeling — use it as a cue to act instead of overthinking.
  • Reflect on past decisions — was there ever a clearly right or wrong choice?
  • Look for a third option or compromise instead of seeing choices as black or white.
  • Practice making small decisions more often, even when they don’t matter much.
  • Trust your gut — your intuition can guide you more than endless logic.
  • Try this: Imagine one choice is removed — do you feel relieved or disappointed?
  • Talk things out with a friend — sometimes clarity comes when we speak aloud.

Tackling Perfectionism

Perfection isn’t possible. Every decision helps you grow — even the “bad” ones. Ask yourself: Does this move me in the right direction?

Facing Fear of Failure

There is rarely a single right answer. Like the Chinese proverb says: “We’ll see.” The full outcome takes time to unfold.

Managing Analysis Paralysis

  • Focus on your priorities — What matters most: price, quality, weight?
  • Remember: You can’t think your way out of a feeling problem.
  • Often, sleep and time help the best choice become clear.

Overcoming Decision Fatigue

Automate what matters most. Once you've decided on your values, reduce daily choices by creating habits and routines.
