Rose-Tinted Glasses

Do you look at the past through rose-tinted glasses? Do you feel a sense of nostalgia when looking into the past?

In this episode, I explore the meaning and use behind this common expression with examples from my own life and a little bit at the end on the deeper meaning behind this phrase.

Episode Summary

🌹 What Are Rose-Tinted Glasses?

This is when we look back on the past more positively than it really was. We might forget the struggles and only remember the good parts.

💡 Examples of Using Rose-Tinted Glasses

  • The Pandemic: You might remember having more free time, less commuting, or more family time—but forget the isolation and uncertainty.
  • Childhood Nostalgia: Thinking your teenage years were full of fun and freedom, while forgetting how stressful or powerless you often felt.
  • Past Relationships: Remembering an ex as perfect, while ignoring the problems that led to the breakup.
  • Old Jobs: Missing a previous job for its perks, like flexibility or coworkers, but forgetting how overworked or underpaid you were.
  • Historical Eras: Believing that past times, like the 1950s or even the medieval period, were simpler and better—ignoring the real struggles people faced.
  • Holidays: Revisiting a place you loved before, only to find it doesn’t feel the same the second time around.
  • Big Life Changes: Thinking back to your old home or country and forgetting the reasons you left in the first place.

📌 The Value of This Knowledge

Understanding this idea can help us in a few important ways:

  • Find comfort in hard times: Just because something feels difficult now doesn't mean it won’t become a positive memory later. You might miss these days someday.
  • Stay grounded in the present: If you're always comparing today to an idealised version of the past, you might miss out on the joys of now.
  • Be aware of the “chase”: Sometimes we try to recreate past experiences and constantly seek that same joy again. But this can stop us from feeling content with what we have.
