Get Better at Small Talk

Small Talk is something many of us struggle with, and it’s a really important part of socialising and using language.

In this episode, I share some of my own awkward experiences with small talk, and then go through time tips on how we can all get better at it to improve our conversations and relationships.

I then share a few phrases that English learners can use to sound more natural when making Small Talk.

Tips to Improve

💬 Purpose of Small Talk

Small talk can serve two main purposes: breaking the ice and finding connections.

  • Breaking the ice: But remember, "This weather is crazy!" might not lead to a deep conversation, so move away from these quickly.
  • Finding connections: This allows you to explore areas where you can dig into a deeper conversation.

❌ Don’t Give Short Answers

When someone asks "How was your week?", don't just say "Good". Give more information, like: "I had a great week. You know, I’ve been obsessed with this band and listening to it non-stop."

❓ Ask Better Questions

Instead of asking, "What is your job?", try asking, "What do you spend your time doing?" or instead of "How was your week?", ask "What made you happy this week?"

✨ Show Interest in Their Passion

You don't have to be interested in the topic itself, but show curiosity about their passion. For example, if they say "I love comic books", you could respond, "Oh interesting! I’ve never really considered picking up a comic, but I’m curious what got you interested in them originally?"

🔗 Relate to Them

If they say, "I like running!" and you don’t like running, connect it to something you do enjoy, like cycling. You can find a similar feeling to make a connection.

📝 Remember What They Say

Showing you remember things they've mentioned is a great way to keep the conversation going. For example, "Did you have a good birthday last week?"

↔️ Move the Conversation in Any Direction

You don’t have to stick to what’s expected. For example, you could answer "How are you?" by saying, "I’m great, but I’ve been so busy planning my next holiday. Have you ever been on a crazy adventure trip before?"

👂 Be a Good Listener

Focus on what the other person is saying rather than preparing your next response. People appreciate when you're genuinely present during the conversation.

💃 Body Language

Your body language plays a crucial role in making small talk effective and engaging.
